Problems with Acrylic

Since World War II, Methyl Methacrylate plastic has remained the material of choice for ocular prosthetics.

The catalyst used in the process is extremely toxic to breathe, even with adequate ventilation. Physical contact with the material can result in serious health related effects over time.

Besides the negative health related effects on the clinician, acrylic in a cured state has been responsible for adverse reactions in certain patients including conjunctivitis, excessive discharge and scarring of the inner lids and socket due to the nature of the polishing process.

This subtractive polish technique associated with acrylic leaves behind microfine scratches and pits that can cause the aforementioned symptoms.

Inaccurate measuring of the acrylic components can result in degassing of the catalyst which can also result in a patient's inability to tolerate their prosthesis.
